Richard Castaldo was born 9/18/1981 in San Diego, California. He was 17 at the time of the shooting. He was the second victim to be hit by the bullets right after Rachel Scott.
During the shooting
Richard was seated outside in the grass with his friend Rachel Scott when the shooting began. They were having lunch when they first heard the detonation of a pipe-bomb but didn't know what it was at the time. Richard and Rachel both believed it was only a senior prank. After they heard the gunmen shout "Go! Go!" Rachel got hit at first but didn't die instantaneously. Afterwards Richard said he simply prepared himself for the shot.He was 8 times in his left arm, right arm, chest, back, and abdomen. He played dead until police came to pick him up and was brought to Swedish Medical Center. On 6/1/1999 he was moved to Craig Hospital where he had to stay until 8/21/1999.
Life after the shooting
Since the shooting he has to use a wheelchair. After the shooting he got his drivers license and a car designed to be used by people in wheelchairs. He was featured in the documentarys "Bowling for Columbine" and "Playing Columbine".
